REAL TALK with Bishop Lester Bradford
Dealing with Real Life Issues from a Biblical Perspective
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“The War Within”
Every individual living in the world today is engaged in warfare. That war is raging on the inside of us. (Life Application Study Bible Isaiah 26:3)
The Peace of God is perfect, but we do not experience His peace constantly, because of our lack of faith. There is strife all around us and even in us, at times. When ever we fix our thoughts on God, we will experience His peace in the turmoil of life.
We experience doubts and fears within because of the perplexities of life. An effort must be made not to focus on the raging tide around us. Instead, focus on the One who is able to calm our fears.
The “mind” is the battleground. Your spiritual enemy attacks you from the mind. Your mind is the control center. Anyone who controls your mind becomes your master. Who would you prefer to be your master God or the devil?
Anyone who keeps their mind focused on God and His unconditional love will undoubtedly become stable and confident.
In the Bible, Philippians 4:6-7 says, “Be careful for nothing…..” In other words, don’t worry about anything. But, that can only happen if you learn to carry your internal struggles to God in prayer. When you pray and believe that God has heard you, then you feel the “Peace of God” within, calming all your fears. The “Peace of God” is a state of untroubled, well being. This peace comes by God’s mercy, which grants deliverance and freedom from all distress resulting from sins in our lives
One Way to Fight the War Within
Keep your thoughts fixed on things that are true, honorable, right, pure, lovely and admirable. Think on things that are excellent and praise worthy. Philippians 4:8 keep your mind on Jesus. If you put this attitude into practice, the God of peace will be with you. You will have peace within.

COMMISSIONER BENNETT LEAVES HIS POST WITH A HIGH POSITIVE RATING… Police Commissioner Thomas Bennett meets with the Minister Dr. Erol Cort today Tuesday to announcement who will succeed him. There will be a change of command ceremony on the 1st of September at 4pm at the Police Training School. He leaves with an 85% positive rating from the Antiguauns and Barbudans and many have praised him for a “job well done”.
In an exclusive interview with the outgoing commissioner, he said, “I have enjoyed my tenure with the Force. I have also enjoying working with everyone in Antigua and Barbuda. I sincerely hope the foundation we have laid will continue. I believe that are a lot of good members in the Force who have the same philosophy and want to make things better. With help of the public, I believe they can do it.”
In a note to the Commissioner Bennett, our Publisher of AB Worldwide Connection eNewsletter, Tyrone Peters, wrote, “As Antiguans and Barbudans, we are grateful for your profound leadership and hard work to our nation, especially to Antigua and Barbuda Royal Police Force. You have demonstrated a love and commitment to our country and we will be externally thankful. The corner stone of your tenure was to rebuild respectability between the Police Force and our communities. As you leave our shores, you are not only leaving permanent foot prints in our sand of times, but you have secured a chapter in our history books. May God continue to bless you and your family.”
Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer, the Police Service Commission, and National Security and Labour Minister Dr Errol Cort have to make the final decision. To date, though, no confirmation of their choice has been given. One person, said to be under consideration for the top job, is Deputy Commissioner Vere Brown who recently returned home from The British Virgin Islands where he was an acting superintendent. Bennett’s contract ends on August 31.
Bennett who came to Antigua at a time when the country was experiencing an upsurge in murders and other crimes said he was satisfied with the progress made in reducing crime and with the improved relationship between lawmen and the community. He said officers now have more confidence in investigating and preventing crime. Yet, the commissioner has acknowledged that there is more work to be done and more progress required, particularly in the areas of administration where, he said, there are some weaknesses. He expressed hope that the force will be able to move forward with a plan to get more police officers from behind desks and back on the streets.

CARIBBEAN SPLASHDOWN MUSIC FESTIVAL 2010 IS SEP 4… Tian Winter and Claudette Peters are set to headline a cast of Antiguan talent at an upcoming Caribbean Splashdown in New York. The event, on Labour Day Saturday, will be held at the Jackie Robinson Bandstand, 148th Street and Bradhurst Avenue, in Harlem. These two top soca performers wooed thousands during Antigua & Barbuda’s Carnival, and are expected to do the same in New York. Also appearing will be former calypso king of Antigua & Barbuda, King Zacari, along with Supa Mario and Bike, and the Energy Band. The Spectrum Band, road march champions out of the Virgin Islands, will also be on show. Thousand of people from around the world are expected to visit New York for Labour Day in Brooklyn. Chairperson of the event Tyra Mason said that Caribbean Splashdown is a unique opportunity to showcase Antiguan and Caribbean cultures to a diverse audience.
“This is truly cultural tourism,” she said. “We are appealing to all peoples who will be visiting for Labour Day, not just Antiguans & Barbudans or our Caribbean brothers and sisters. We want to showcase Antigua & Barbuda culture to all the other communities in the United States.”
Attendees can experience the music and food of Antigua/Barbuda and other Caribbean Islands, in an environment that aims to provide a family affair. Fungi and saltfish, fry fish, rice pudding, fry dumplings... you name the Antiguan "pot" and it will be on sale that day.
“Unlike Labour Day Monday on the parkway, the Splashdown is more family friendly," Mason said. "Persons will be able to intermingle and they will be able to have their children walking instead of having to pick them up as is the norm on the Parkway."
Along with the headline acts, the organisers are still negotiating with other artists for the event. Lawrence Mason, formerly of ABS Radio and Vybes FM and Tyrone Peters of the Antigua & Barbuda enewsletter will be the MC for the day. The event is hosted by the Antigua & Barbuda Council of Organizations, a group made up of smaller Antigua associations. Last year, 5,000 people attended the event, and organisers expect a bigger and more diverse crowd for 2010.

NO PAY FOR SOME WORKERS AT PUBLIC WORKS… The alleged failure of top officials at the Ministry of Public Works to communicate with staff may have triggered a bout of industrial action last Friday. Several employees staged an impromptu strike on Friday, claiming they have not been paid for three weeks. The workers mounted a picket outside their workplace shortly after midday, with placards that bluntly described their frustrations. Many expressed anxiety that with school due to reopen shortly, they will not be able to provide their children with educational supplies. Several of the picketers said that their displeasure at not being paid was compounded by what they consider to be the added disrespect of no one in authority informing them of the situation.
“Not even a sign,” one lamented, “they don’t even have the courtesy to say ‘sorry for the inconvenience’ or something like that.” Another was almost beside himself in making the point that “We only get paid one time for de month ah August; three weeks and now the month ah go done and me no get me money yet. School ah go open; pickney fuh feed …” About 25 workers were visibly engaged in the protest action. But the many more who looked on from the sidelines were clearly doing anything but working. Between lunchtime and the scheduled end of work yesterday, repeated calls to all numbers listed for the public works ministry were unanswered. The weekly paid non-established employees leading the work stoppage and picket are represented by Antigua Trades and Labour Union (AT&LU). However, the industrial action they mounted on Friday was undertaken without their union’s prior knowledge.
AT&LU president Wigley George arrived on the scene to express support, saying the union fully endorsed the workers’ militant response to the protracted non-payment. “I am here in support of the workers and to make sure that the union stands with them,” he said. “This whole thing was initiated by the workers and of course the union must stand with them because of the nature of the problem they are having.”
George said this was not the first time the workers had had to endure a prolonged wait for their wages. “Whenever they are paid they receive just one pay and there are always two pay cheques in the back for them.” Wigley George sought to find out when pay day was and made his way upstairs to the permanent secretary’s office. After some reluctance – which included insistence that she not be recorded – Sylvanie Thomas declared that the public works ministry was not to blame for the non-payment. She said the cheques were sent by Treasury to the bank, but once there could not be honoured for lack of funds. According to the PS, her office was awaiting word from Treasury on when the money would become available to process the payment, but she had no idea when that would be.

ANTIGUANS BANNING TO HELP THEIR COMMUNITY… Back in December ’08, two born-again Christians who found joy in helping others, decided to join forces and do so full-time under a formal organisation. The two individuals, Francine Joseph-James and Carolyn Matthew-Nation formed Community Charitable Ministries, through which they would help over a dozen families make ends meet. With a membership of 12 including four executive members, the group meets every second Saturday of the month.
“The organisation came about from persons coming together who have already been involved with helping people on an individual basis, who saw the need to do more because of the urgency that surrounded them,” Joseph-James, chairperson of the group said, “We were surrounded by people in the church who just seemed so needy. It’s not that we have money but we just figured we could pool our resources together and help them.”
Community Charitable Ministries, she said, is currently providing for 15 families whose situations they would have heard about by word of mouth or having been approached by the families themselves. And background checks are done for prospects so as to prevent exploitation of the organisation.
“Initially, (funding) was from our personal money and then … we began raising funds because our income was not enough to provide for the 15 persons whom we now issue food and clothing for on a monthly basis,” Joseph-James said. “And that was effective December ’08 until presently or every single month.”
Fund-raisers have been in the form of lunches, cake sales, walkathons and letters distributed to businesses soliciting funds. Responding to one of those letters, Harney Motors had given the group a cheque for $500. Among the group’s charity cases is a grandmother whose daughter died leaving grandchildren for her to care for. “What we did recently was to build an extra room so that she can have enough space and every single month we give them food and clothing,” Joseph-James said.
Last Saturday, the organisation held its annual back-to-school event at JSC Sports Complex where stationery and snacks were distributed to several children. Other items provided included books, pens, pencils, erasers, pencil cases, rulers. The organisation is planning another fund-raiser for October 2 on Market Street and then another on December 18 – its annual formal dinner at Jolly Beach Resort.

GENERAL PUBLIC INVITED TO BE PART OF POLICE WEEK ACTIVITIES… In recent times, the police have expressed satisfaction with the relationship between themselves and the public and this year it is evident in their theme for Police Week, ‘Rising to meet the challenges in partnership with the community.’ Police Public Relations Officer, Senior Sergeant William Holder explains the rationale for its selection. “We recognise we live in challenging times – although not confined to Antigua & Barbuda – due to the downturn in the world economy. We see this as contributing to an increase in criminal activity, but this can be addressed if we work in collaboration with the community,” he said.
Over the past month, the senior sergeant said, the collaboration has led to a reduction in criminal activity and solving of many crimes. Police Week 2010, the officer said, is “aimed at showing appreciation to the public and to let them know the importance of their efforts, and to continue our good relations.” As a prelude to the start of the week beginning September 5, a number of pre-events will be held.
First off were a Road Race and Fun Walk to which the public was invited to participate. It kicked off at 5 pm from the VC Bird Bust at the West Bus Station to Police Recreation Ground. Prizes were awarded in the various categories. The event was sponsored by Harney Motors. A Netball Competition will be held at YMCA on Thursday September 2 between police and other teams in the community league. The week officially starts with a church service at All Saints Anglican Church at 8:30 am, after which a breakfast will be held for rank and file and a few invited guests. On that same day, the lawmen will host Sunday Half Hour, where the police choir will be featured on ABS television. On Sunday, too, there will be a Band Tattoo in Bolans and the Pigotts and Liberta Playing fields. The general public is invited to all police stations, on Monday from 9 am, to see police at work and some may have an opportunity to go patrolling with them.
Continuing Monday, there will be the Fire Brigade Kaufman Cup Competition, in which a team from the Montserrat police Force will show off their skills along with the local cops. One of the more well-attended shows, a Talent and Fashion Show, will be held at 8 pm at Police Recreation Grounds.Tuesday is Career Day when children from the various schools have the opportunity to work along with the police for part of the day. Inter-force football competition at YASCO is at 4 pm. Wednesday at 8 pm is a Variety Concert at Police Recreation Ground, where a skit will be performed. Presentations will be made from the Anguilla Force. On Thursday, there will be a police display at ARG and the Beating of the Retreat at 5 pm, followed by the Calypso Competition at Police Recreation Grounds at 9pm. Sports Day is on Friday at Yasco from 11:15 am and there will be a dance at Police Recreation Grounds at 9 pm. Saturday is Veterans’ Cocktail, where persons who would have served over 20 years will be feted. Sunday rounds off the week with Fun Day and Swimming Competition for police family and friends.
Senior Sergeant Holder noted that Police Week is the time when the general public gets a chance to see the other side of the police, a chance to interact closer. “We‘re extending an invitation to all to come out and be part of our week of activities,” he said.

BURNING FLAMES MAN, KROKUSS IS STILL HOSPITALIZED… A three-car collision on the Marble Hill main road has landed Burning Flames front man David “Krokus” Edwards and several other persons in Mount St John’s Medical Centre. As of today (30th Aug), he was still in the hospital with head injuries. According to police spokesman Senior Sergeant William Holder, David “Krokuss” Edwards was driving a Mitsubishi Evolution at around 3:15 pm Friday when he lost control of the car, hitting two other vehicles in the process. And while reports that Edwards suffered life-threatening injuries have been making the rounds on social networking sites and mobile devices, a hospital spokesperson said he was in stable condition and does not appear to be in grave danger.
The others involved were also taken to hospital and, so far, all except one are in stable condition. The other is in critical condition though the details of her injures are still unclear. Meantime, a crowd of concerned fans and on-lookers have assembled outside the emergency room to get the very latest on Krokus’ condition. According to hospital spokesperson, Salma Crump, an estimated 60 to 80 people had gathered at Mount St John’s Medical Centre shortly after the injured parties arrived there.

STATE COLLEGE EXPECTS INFLUX OF APPLICATIONS… Antigua State College (ASC) is facing a tough battle to accommodate students for the upcoming semester after a record number applied to the tertiary institution.
“It’s the largest number we ever had; it might taper off just under 900. We’ve never, ever, ever had that number. The most I think we’ve had before was in the 700s and usually we take in about 450 or so persons,” said Acting Principal Eloise Hamilton. “Right now, I don’t know how many will be accepted. I have no idea because we don’t know about their passes, but we are in unchartered waters right now,” she added.
Hamilton said given the increased pass rate at the Caribbean Secondary Examination Certificate examinations, she expects a higher than normal proportion of students will be accepted.
“I think we are going to have some problems in terms of being able to accommodate the students, because … out of 700 or so passes, we normally take in around 400 or so. If the results are good, out of 900 something, we would expect to be taking a lot more than usual,” Hamilton said. “We’ve never had to turn back people because of space and I’m hoping we will not have to,” she added.
The college allowed students a small window of opportunity, this past Wednesday and Thursday, to apply for admission despite late registration closing up to a month prior. The window came after requests for admission flooded the college. The expected influx of students will pose a challenge to the new principal of ASC, who is expected to be appointed by mid-October.

ANTIGUA WILL HOST OECS CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE FOR HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM TRAINING… Antigua & Barbuda will become the co-ordinating hub for hospitality and tourism in the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) with the establishment of the OECS Centre of Excellence for Hospitality and Tourism training. Executive Director of Antigua & Barbuda Hospitality Training Institute (ABHTI) Calvin Ambrose said the proposal was finalised at an inaugural meeting of the OECS Tourism and Hospitality Task Force in St Lucia recently.
“While the hub will be located in Antigua as one of the member states, governance and management will be determined at the OECS level with each member state having a vote,” Ambrose said. “It is important to note that it is anticipated that the model will be implemented by the EDF under funding from the EU, and the project valued at 6 million euros with an allocation of 4.4 million will be utilised to construct a 20-room hotel and two additional classroom blocks on a 10-acre property of the Antigua & Barbuda Hospitality Training Institute.”
Ambrose said the meeting attracted representatives of various hospitality training programmes within the eight members of the regional grouping. “The mandate of the task force is to further the proposed model of establishing an OECS network of excellence in hospitality and tourism which was approved earlier in the year by ministers of tourism and CARIFORUM. The model provides for a single entity comprised of a single co-ordinating hub to be located here in Antigua & Barbuda and supported by nodes of specialisation in each of the other eight territories in the OECS,” the ABHTI executive director said.
The inaugural meeting was held to “flesh out” the task force’s terms of reference, and that body is now mandated to fine-tune the proposal with a view to finalising the working document to go forward to establish the network, Ambrose. Antigua & Barbuda Hospitality Training Institute is located at Dutchman’s Bay.

The subject – the newest event on Antigua & Barbuda’s calendar of events- the Antigua and Barbuda Cricket Fest.
“Cricket is a passion on our island and there is no better way to experience authentic Antigua than watching a match or playing the locals. With sunshine all year round, 365 beautiful white sand beaches to choose from and an insatiable passion for sports of all kinds, Antigua is the ultimate Caribbean sports tourism destination,” Modeste said during the interview sessions. In seven hours, a release said, the duo talked to16 radio stations covering London, Leeds, Somerset, Surrey, Isle of Man, Leicester, Birmingham, Bristol, West Yorkshire, Chester, Cornwall, and others with syndication throughout the entire UK.
“I’ve always believed that down-the-line interviews are a great way to gain exposure for the destination,” said the UK director who felt that Antigua & Barbuda “certainly scored a six” with this activity. Modeste expressed pleasure that Richardson, one of Antigua’s cricketing ambassadors and a well-recognised personality in the UK, was able to join the tourist office to discuss “a subject such as cricket that is so synonymous with Antigua.”
Richardson, who is in the UK playing cricket with Lashings World X1, is also promoting sports tourism in Antigua & Barbuda as one of the organisers behind the November 17 – 21 cricket fest scheduled to take place at Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Stadium.
“The interviews gave us an opportunity to reach out to a wide audience throughout the UK. We were well received, the cricket fest was well received and it definitely piqued people’s interest in coming to Antigua and Barbuda.” Antigua & Barbuda’s visitor arrival figures are known to significantly increase during months when major sporting events are being hosted. Prime Minister the Hon. W. Baldwin Spencer
Statement following the Passage of Hurricane Earl
5pm, Monday 30th August 2010
My fellow Antiguans and Barbudans, we have just experienced the passage of Hurricane Earl, which quickly developed from a tropical storm to a category two hurricane in a matter of a few hours yesterday. Throughout the ordeal, the National Office of Disaster Services has kept the nation informed and on Sunday morning, briefed all the key essential services and stakeholders. At 4 pm on Sunday the National Emergency Operations Centre was partially activated to monitor the storm. Information was relayed to the public via the radio and television media with the help of frequent Met office updates and reports from NODS' community disaster coordinators. Communication lines were established and maintained with police mobile patrols and shelter managers. As I had advised Antiguans and Barbudans in a national broadcast several weeks ago, the National Office of Disaster Services had established and publicised a list of hurricane shelters in the country.
So far, I am advised that 259 persons were occupying shelters up to this morning, although this number could change over time. A total of 110 persons were occupying shelters in my own constituency of St. John's Rural West. Fifty (50) persons in St. Mary's North were in shelters up to this morning. In St. John's Rural South, 42 persons were in shelters. I commend those individuals and families, especially from low lying and flood prone areas, who heeded early warnings, and took the precaution to move to designated shelters, in order to avert personal danger.
Most of us are now without the convenience of piped water and electricity as APUA was forced to turn off supplies in keeping with the corporation's hurricane operational procedures. APUA has advised that it is in a position to restore water supplies as soon as the hurricane has passed. Electricity supplies will take longer to be restored as there are reports of downed power lines and poles. APUA personnel will be working hard to restore power as quickly as possible. We are thankful that so far there has been no report of loss of life and minimal reports of damage to houses and other property. Assessment of damage across Antigua and Barbuda will continue. Unfortunately, one family of three lost their home to fire in Johnson's Point. Fire tenders from the Bolans station responded to that situation.
All the relevant agencies have been instructed to be fully mobilised to clear roads, unclog blocked drains and render necessary assistance to those in need. In the meantime, the National Emergency Operations Centre has recommended that schools and work places remain closed today as the nation recovers from this trauma. We are thankful to God for sparing fair Antigua and Barbuda from greater damage. The Government and people of Antigua and Barbuda use this opportunity to convey our heartfelt sympathies to our neighbours in the Leeward Islands who might have suffered any damage, loss of life or injuries during the passage of Hurricane Earl. We wish for them a speedy and full recovery.
I also want to commend all members of the National Emergency Response system, stakeholders and the media for their hard work and cooperation. During the ordeal, several Antiguans and Barbudans came to the assistance of their neighbours and friends. I applaud you and urge you all to continue to assist and support each other in any way possible over the coming days as the nation recovers. The Cabinet will continue to assess the situation and to mobilise the resources necessary to ensure a full and speedy recovery.
The nation is also urged to monitor the development of Tropical Storm Fiona which was formed this afternoon east of the Northern Leeward islands as it may become necessary for the islands to be placed under a tropical storm watch. May God bless us all and continue to bless our country of Antigua and Barbuda at this time.
